Hi everyone!
My name is Lindsey and I am currently a college student studying at Miami University in Ohio. In my English 112 course I was assigned to make a food journal so I have created this blog as my Inquiry 3 project. This blog is all about iconic foods from iconic cities! I have put together a list of the 12 most popular cities in America according to tourists and then found the most iconic food from each respective city. Not only do I hope this blog gets me a good grade, but I also hope that this blog inspires travelers to expand their boundaries and try foods that are special to the places they visit and I also hope this blog inspires those non-traveling types to step out of their comfort zone and explore the United States and the delicious foods we have to offer!

Because Texas shares a border with Mexico, it is no surprise the two cultures come together in the very popular form of "Tex-Mex." The name "Tex-Mex" was originally a nickname for the Texas Mexican Railway chartered in southern Texas in 1875. Since then the nickname has evolved into a nickname for food dishes that combine the two cultures mentioned to create a new delicious combination of flavors. "Tex-Mex" is very popular in Texas so tourists have many options to choose from.

Tuna fishing is very very popular San Diego. Fishers are known to catch some of the biggest tuna ever caught in the San Diego area so naturally the tuna here must be very good. In fact, for most of the 20th century San Diego was known as the "tuna capital of the pacific." Tourists can stop by local fish markets to buy and cook their own tuna, otherwise San Diego has many dining options that offer this delicious tuna on the menu.

Boston clam chowder is a cream or milk-based chowder that is generally thicker version of chowder. Other ingredients include potatoes, onions, and clams, however in Boston it is practically forbidden to include tomatoes in the dish whereas in Manhattan tomatoes are welcomed in clam chowder, thinning it out and giving it a red color. To midwesterners, this dish is referred to as “Boston clam chowder” however to natives of Boston it is referred to as “New England clam chowder.”

The original pizza comes from Italy however in the late 1800s and early 1900s when two Neapolitan immigrants came to the United States, Ike Sewell and Ric Riccardo came up with the idea to make an American-Italian pizza with a deeper dish, crunchier crust, and tomatoes on top. This pizza was the first Chicago deep dish pizza and it all started at Pizzeria Uno on Chicago’s north side. Some (primarily New Yorkers) may argue the thin crust, New York style pizza is better, but being from Chicago myself I can firmly say they are very wrong.

Tourists can find anything from designer cupcakes, to gluten-free, to even animal friendly cupcakes when they come to visit Washington D.C.

The pineapple was given its English name because it resembled a pine cone. In earlier times the pineapple was the prized possession to have on one’s dinner table. Even George Washington was said to have grown his own pineapples at his own. It is still unknown when the first pineapple was found or planted in Hawaii however it is now Hawaii’s signature fruit. Now Honolulu is home to the Dole Plantation which began as a simple fruit stand in 1950.

The family discovered sourdough bread by using San Francisco wild yeast in their french bread recipe which gave the bread a unique taste. The original Boudin sourdough recipe still lives on in their various store locations sprinkled throughout San Francisco so tourists should stop by and get a little piece of California history.

Tourists should be encouraged to grab some of this tasty fruit and go share some with the ever-lovable Mickey Mouse. And if you aren’t into the messy experience of eating an orange, try a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice instead.

While New York cheesecake is a very broad iconic dish, Miami has a much more specific meal that they are famous for. The Florida stone crab is a crab that can be found in the western North Atlantic ocean and then on the plates of many hungry Miamians. Stone Crabs have been a well-known dish in Miami forever practically and here’s why: stone crabs are a renewable resource per say. Fishermen only take one claw from each crab because the crab can regenerate its claws therefore Miami will never go without delicious stone crab claws. When in Miami, you can’t go wrong with stopping by Joe’s Stone Crab and grabbing a bite to eat.

Cheesecake supposedly originated in Greece. Some historians believe that cheesecake was given to olympians during the first Olympic games in 776 B.C. however, according to New Yorkers, cheesecake wasn’t really cheesecake until it was cheesecake in New York. New York has many well-known foods such as pizza or bagels, but when researching I found that the most iconic New York delicacy was their cheesecake. New York cheesecake is known for its simplicity. There are no bells and whistles, just simply cream cheese, cream, eggs, and sugar.
