Boston clam chowder is a cream or milk-based chowder that is generally thicker version of chowder. Other ingredients include potatoes, onions, and clams, however in Boston it is practically forbidden to include tomatoes in the dish whereas in Manhattan tomatoes are welcomed in clam chowder, thinning it out and giving it a red color. To midwesterners, this dish is referred to as “Boston clam chowder” however to natives of Boston it is referred to as “New England clam chowder.”
